Engines of Non LNWR Design
Page 1

During the early years of the LNWR a wide variety of engines from a number of locomotive manufacturers ran on the lines. Some were inherited from constituent companies or absorbed railways, others were purchased whilst the company's manufacturing capabilities reached sufficient capacity to build enough engines for all services. These engines were often rebuilt during the next forty years. They were also moved to the outposts such as Cromford and High Peak

We present here a small (but hopefully expanding) selection. To obtain a more complete understanding of the variety employed we recommend Harry Jack's book 'Locomotives of the LNWR Southern Division'.
